Competition

The PULSe Program hosts an annual "Five" Minute Thesis for current students. The subject of the presentation is related to interdisciplinary research that current research being investigated in your permanent lab. The goal of these presentations is not only to develop your presentation skills but also to enlighten and encourage potential students about your area of research and PULSe.

Eligibility

PULSe second year students and beyond are eligible for the competition.

Application Requirements

Applications must include your name, year of entry, major professor, training group, project title, and a 150-word abstract.

The abstract will be evaluated and a select number of presentations will be selected for the competition.

Guidelines

The presentation rules are based on the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition developed by the University of Queensland. However, these rules have been modified to more suitably fit the expectations of this particular event:

• Presentations are limited to 5 minutes (rather than three), starting with the presenter's initiation of movement or speech.
• Students may have up to three PowerPoint™ slides (no animations are permissible).
• Before submitting your work for this competition, please consult your academic advisor for approval.
• No additional media (e.g. sound or video files) or props (e.g. costumes, laboratory equipment) are allowed.

Judging

Faculty and staff may serve as judges at the competition. Each of the following criteria has equal weight:

• Communication style: was the thesis topic and its significance communicated in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience?
• Comprehension: did the presentation help the audience understand the research?
• Engagement: did the oration make the audience want to know more?
