In December 2022, Lori Hoagland, Professor in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and co-director of the Arequipa Nexus Institute, and Cristian Salinas, PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Ecological Sciences and Engineering Program, visited the Department of Caldas and capital of Colombia to re-establish research collaborations started by Dr. Hoagland when she was a Fulbright Scholar at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá, but interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They also sought to lay the groundwork for developing a study abroad course for Purdue students in Colombia, and support other academic and research  cooperation between Purdue and institutions in the South American country. They were accompanied by Dr. Sherlyn Tipayno, a Fulbright Scholar from the Philippines who was conducting a sabbatical in Dr. Hoagland’s Lab, and Esteban Villamizar, an undergraduate student at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and fellow of the UREP-C program in Spring 2023 who worked in the Hoagland Lab.

Their first visit was to the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones de Café – CENICAFE, which is part of the prestigious National Association of Coffee Growers. The group learned about Colombia’s unique coffee production systems, and exchanged common interests in leveraging new insights in microbiology to enhance the sustainability of coffee production. They also took steps to formalize a memorandum of understanding that will support collaborative research between a diverse group of scientists at CENICAFE and Purdue University. At CENICAFE, they were received by Dr. Lucio Navarro, Dr. Hernán González and Dr. Juan Benavides, who previously completed their doctoral studies or conducted short-term research stays at Purdue.

Next, the group travelled to Caldas to meet with Dr. Neil Guerrero, Vice Rector of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede Manizales, to promote implementation of the UREP-C program in this institution.  As a result of this meeting, the first students of this university will come to Purdue to do their research internships starting in August 2023.

In order to promote further mobility and cooperation between students, faculty members and researchers, they met with directors and professors at Universidad de Caldas, Universidad de Manizales, and Centro BIOS, which are widely recognized for their cutting-edge research and educational efforts in sustainable agriculture, veterinary science, and bioinformatics, respectively.

During their time in Caldas, the delegation caught up with former students from the Nexo Caldas Program (Nelsy Arboleda, Jaime Zambrano, María Sánchez and Natalia Vidal), who conducted research internships in the Hoagland Lab during 2021 and 2022, and subsequently graduated with degrees in the Management of Agriculture Business at Universidad de Caldas.

Finally, they met with officials at Fulbright's office in Colombia, including Dr. Ana María Carvajal, a Purdue alumna who currently serves as an educational advisor. The group shared statistics from the Fulbright Program in Colombia, where Purdue is by far, the institution with the largest number of Colombian beneficiaries. They also discussed opportunities for further building on this relationship.

Of course, the group could not miss out on the many touristic opportunities offered in the country during their visit. In addition to enjoying the coffee cultural landscape, a UNESCO world heritage site, they visited Los Nevados National Natural Park, a hot springs resort, historical and commercial centers  in  Caldas and Bogotá, and took the time to taste and thoroughly enjoy the diverse gastronomic offerings of Colombia.
