A message from President Daniels regarding study abroad

Dear students,

Have you thought about studying abroad? Have you dreamed of going to class in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, in the rainforests of South America, or in a one-of-a-kind lab in one of China’s top research universities? International experiences can be life changing and I encourage each of you to consider the opportunities available to you.

A Study Abroad Fair next week — 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, on Memorial Mall — will showcase more than 200 programs. I encourage you to check them out, talk to students who have taken part in these programs and to faculty who sponsor them.

Learning in another country is fast becoming an educational necessity in today’s global economy. Beyond the allure of an exotic and new location, you can immerse yourself in a culture different from your own, step outside your comfort zone, broaden the bounds of what you are capable, and prepare yourself to make an impact on the world.

This fall, we will implement measures, including scholarship incentives, that we hope will make it easier for you to take part in international programs. I urge each of you to look into these programs, find out which ones might enhance your regular coursework, and take a step towards an international learning opportunity before you graduate.
