Environmental Science Technicians work to monitor environmental conditions through the use of biological and chemical tests.

Summary

Environmental Science Technicians work to monitor environmental conditions through the use of biological and chemical tests. Fieldwork is conducted to sample air, soil, water, or other materials to assess current conditions. Environmental researchers work to study questions related to biodiversity, pollution, and other trends that may impact an ecosystem. 

Using a background of laboratory analytical skills, environmental science technicians process their environmental samples to support the research of environmental research questions. Possible uses for data include field analysis, report writing and grant allocation, research report publications, reporting to federal agencies such as the EPA and NOAA, and other various uses.

 

Educational Requirements

Environmental Science Technicians are the intersection of environmental science and practical lab skills. To best meet these goals, individuals can pursue a variety of educational backgrounds. A background in Life or Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences can suffice, given an individual has completed significant hands on lab work. 

While advanced degrees, such as a Master's or a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, are not required for this type of role they may be a requirement to conduct or lead independent research.

According to salary.com, the average salary for an Environmental Science Technician as of May 2023 was $53,172.
