Nomination Process

The Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars (OGSPS) encourages its students, postdoctoral trainees, faculty, and staff to nominate themselves or other members of their department, as appropriate, for annual performance awards each year. Several different awards are open to nomination.

The nomination processes for all awards given through the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS), the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), the Schmidt Science Fellows and the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings organization are specific to those awards. Please visit the corresponding sections for detailed information.

The nomination processes for the awards given through Purdue are detailed below.

Provost's Award for Outstanding Graduate Mentor

Nominees for this award can be from any college or school but must be a current graduate faculty member on the West Lafayette campus. The nomination process for this award is as follows:

  • Nominations should be forwarded to the associate dean of the OGSPS by the relevant assistant/associate dean in each academic college.
  • The nomination process at the college or school level should include input from graduate faculty and graduate students. 

Please note that nominating documents will be limited to five pages, exclusive of the curriculum vitae and support letters. They must include, in the order indicated, the following:

  • A cover sheet with nominee's name and contact information.
  • Three letters of support: one each from the nominator (a Purdue administrator) and two from former students (1 page each).
  • Nominee's reflection (written in the first person) on involvement in various aspects of graduate education (1-2 pages). This section should be written by the nominee and should include, but not be limited to, innovations in graduate mentoring and graduate administrative service.
  • Nominee's curriculum vitae.
  • List of past master's and doctoral students for whom the nominee served as major professor and the students' current positions if available (1-2 pages).

Graduate School Mentoring Award for Postdoctoral Trainees

Nominations for this award can be made by undergraduate students, graduate students, other postdoctoral scholars, faculty or staff. The nomination process requires a recommendation letter (250-500 words) and completion of a nomination form.

Graduate School Mentoring Award for Graduate Students

Nominations for this award can be made by undergraduate students, other graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty or staff. The nomination process requires a recommendation letter (250-500 words) and completion of a nomination form.

Purdue Sigma Xi Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Research Awards

This awards competition takes the form of a scientific poster competition. Those interested in the competition do not need to be Sigma Xi members to participate.

The nomination process includes the submission of an application and an abstract (150 words maximum) as well as a brief poster presentation at a public competition session. Please contact competition administrators for complete information about poster submission, deadlines, presentation, judging and award presentation.
