The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic hasn't slowed down the Towards Clean Water project. In fact, they are ahead of schedule! The PI and Co-PI at UNSA collaborated and built up their capacity for research and publications, which resulted in 5 journal papers published and 2 in preparation, 2 papers to be submitted for review, 6 conference papers and 2 posters.

The Arequipa Nexus Institute welcomes Prof. Sandro Condori to Purdue, a visiting scholar from the Universidad Nacional of Saint Augustin de Arequipa (UNSA) in Peru! Prof. Condori is collaborating with Purdue Agronomy and Horticulture faculty and Nexus affiliated, Drs. Cankui Zhang, Mohsen Mohammadi and Jian-Kang Zhu from the “Nexus Crops CRISPR and Phenomics: Individual and Institutional Capacity Building for Crop Science at Universidad Nacional de San Agustin (UNSA)” project.

Last week, the Arequipa Nexus Institute welcomed an UNSA leadership team to Purdue: Dr. Rohel Sanchez Sanchez, Rector, Dr. Horacio Barreda Tamayo, Vice Rector of Research, and Valeria Chipana Quispe, Director, met with Victor Maqque and Tim Filley to explore the possibility of building a research center like Discovery Park on UNSA’s campus.

The Nexus team presented their latest research and developments at the American Geophysical Union 2019 fall meeting in the Arequipa Region, Peru. The AGU is a nonprofit organization of Earth, atmospheric, ocean, hydrologic, space and planetary scientists. The meeting highlighted the rapid development in earth and planetary science research, including the introduction of new data streams and the discussion of the growing demand for accessible science.

Dimensions of Discovery, The Purdue Office of the Executive Vice President for Research’s magazine, is featuring one of our Purdue undergraduates that took part in the 2019 summer DURI-Nexus projects in Arequipa in the December edition. The article, “Undergraduate internships expose students to trans-disciplinary, cross-cultural research”, highlights Ally Jacoby, a junior in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science, and her postdoctoral mentor Dr. Erika Foster from EAPS.

The Arequipa Nexus Institute researcher and Purdue Associate Professor of food science, Haley Olivier, received this month the 2019 Corinne Alexander Spirit of the land-Grant Mission Award for her innovative work in the food science field. This award was named in honor of Corinne Alexander a professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics and recognizes faculty members in the Colleges of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine and Health and Human Sciences working across all three land-grant mission areas. Dr. Oliver is Co-Pi in the Nexus project: : “Development of training in Good Agricultural Practices and Food Handling for food producers and processors in Arequipa” with Purdue Professor Amanda Deering, College of Agriculture, Peru in partnership with the Universidad of San Augustin (UNSA). The project has the goal to understand the current agricultural and food processing conditions in the Arequipa region and to improve food safety issues through an education program for growers and food processors/handlers. The Purdue and UNSA Nexus group recently conducted a workshop for farmers in the Arequipa region about agricultural and manufacturing practices in crop management, storing and management.
