The Center for Healthy Living (CHL) is launching a new, free weight management program in 2025. This free program is designed to provide benefits-eligible employees and covered dependents with an individualized treatment approach and multi-pronged support. Research shows that the best wat to ensure longer-term effectiveness and prevent diseases related to weight – type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and more – is to have coaching, regular check-ups and a support community. All of this is provided through the CHL and easily accessed at any campus clinic location or virtually for participants that reside more than 30 miles from any campus clinic location.

All benefits-eligible faculty and staff, including those who do not participate in a Purdue health plan, and spouses and dependents covered on a Purdue health plan.

Note: To enroll in the program, individuals do not have to be taking a weight loss medication currently and individuals can enroll without taking any medications.

The program outline follows a four month and beyond schedule:

Month 1

  • Meet with a CHL health coach/dietitian
  • Review weight loss goals
  • Determine nutrition and exercise plan
  • Meet with CHL provider/pharmacist to review medications and discuss proposed medication treatment, if applicable

Month 2

  • Meet with CHL health coach/dietitian
  • Change nutrition and exercise plan as needed
  • Meet with CHL provider/pharmacist to discuss any medication side effects and review nutrition and exercise progress

Month 3

  • Meet with CHL health coach/dietitian
  • Review weight loss goals
  • Get labs done for three-month mark
Month 4 and beyond
  • Meet a minimum of every three months
  • Repeat labs every three months for monitoring
  • Contact pharmacist, dietitian or behavioral health counselor as needed
Note: Those taking weight loss medication must participate in the program for as long as they are taking the medication.

Participation in the CHL’s weight management program is required to receive prescription coverage for any weight loss medication. That means if a GLP-1 or another (non-GLP-1) weight loss medication is part of your treatment, then you must be enrolled in the CHL program for prescription coverage of that particular medication.

If you are not enrolled in the CHL weight management program by June 30, 2025, then the cost of your weight loss medications will no longer be covered by your Purdue health plan beginning July 1, 2025.

Note: Only CHL providers may prescribe weight loss medications under AffirmedRx. A Healthcare Navigator will be able to assist you as you transition your care to a CHL provider.

To enroll in the program, call the CHL at 765-494-0111.

Transitioning care to the CHL

In the beginning of the year, we announced that the Center for Healthy Living (CHL) is overseeing weight management treatment—including medications—for anyone covered by a Purdue health plan. Enrollment in the program is required by June 30, 2025, to continue receiving pharmacy coverage for any weight loss medications.* To enroll, call the CHL at 765-494-0111.

We’ve asked the CHL team to answer some of the most common employee questions:

Why is a multi-prong approach to weight management more sustainable?
The care team includes a provider, pharmacist and health coach/dietitian. The provider guides your care, the pharmacist educates you on weight loss medications and the health coach shares best practices to fuel and strengthen your body. This flexible approach allows us to fit each person’s unique preferences, lifestyle and challenges. ~ Whitney Soto, Lead Health Coach

How long is the program?
The length of the program is dependent on each patient’s individual needs, but the critical timeframe is the first four months of intensive health coaching, nutrition and physical activity recommendations, and medication education. At four months, we work with you to determine next steps in your journey. ~ Dr. Estaban Ramirez, Medical Director

After someone enrolls, what's the first step?
You visit with a CHL provider where you will discuss your medical and family history, previous actions you’ve taken on your weight loss journey (i.e., medications, surgeries, lifestyle modifications) and your goals. Next, we schedule labs and follow-up appointments with a provider, pharmacist and health coach. ~ Daniel Balcerak, Physician Assistant

What is unique about this program?
We use scientifically proven medications, techniques and lifestyle modifications to help our patients not only lose weight, but lower the risk of cardiovascular events, diabetes, stroke, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. ~ Leni Manne, Nurse Practitioner

How does this program address my mental health in addition to my physical health?
Weight management and mental health have a bi-directional relationship. Symptoms of depression and anxiety (like lack of motivation, fatigue, and emotional eating) can become additional barriers to weight management goals. Additionally, any routine or physiological change can affect mental health.

The good news is behavioral health support is available! Participants of the weight management program can schedule with a behavioral health counselor at the CHL. ~ Amanda Hathcock, LLPC, NCC, Behavioral Health Counselor

Virtual Options Available
If you live more than 30 miles from any Center for Healthy Living, we offer a virtual weight management program.

*If you fill a weight loss medication prescription after June 30, 2025, and are not enrolled in the CHL program, you will be responsible for the full cost of the medication.
