“Studying psychology, I know that community — and specifically belonging — is super important,” Shye says. “It leads to having a good college experience. Getting involved in a community is essential, and it can be discouraging if you don’t see people who you identify with. So I decided to talk with Black students here, see from their perspectives and understand where they’re coming from.”

Sarobbie Hagen, a Purdue Promise student, states: “To me, Purdue Promise means opportunity and security. This program helps me feel secure in the ability to be able to obtain my degree no matter my income. Purdue Promise also offers opportunities within the program, such as study abroad trips, mentorship programs, and networking opportunities that students can participate in and grow from.”

Jazmine reflects on her role and the time she has spent with the program, stating: “It has been helpful to understand the innerworkings and dynamics of the program since I have been here since 2016 and held many different positions.” Having been a first-generation student and low-income student herself, Jazmine is able to connect with students and the mission of the program.
