Virtual Lab: Groundwater Contamination Simulation
We have created two labs virtual labs for the Groundwater model. Lab 1 is the Qualitative Lab designed for environmental science classes. Lab 2 is a Quantitative Lab designed for APES classes.
Lab 1 (Qualitative Lab)
- Designed for Environmental Science Classes
- Time - 1-2 45-minute class periods
- Link to Lab 1 (Qualitative Lab) student page
This is the Qualitative Groundwater Lab. Students will observe videos of the above model where a red dye is used to represent a contaminant. They will make predictions as to which wells and other locations will be impacted by the contaminant. There are model runs of introducing the contaminant in each of the wells and other locations in the model. The link to the student handout is located on the student page.

Lab 2 (Quantitative Lab)
- Designed for A.P. Environmental Science Classes
- Time - 2-3 45-minute class periods
- Lab 2 (Quantitative Lab) student page
This is the Quantitative Groundwater Lab. This lab goes beyond the level of lab 1. Students must use the Standard Curve and data supplied to determine the concentration of the contaminant in locations.

We used the Envision Groundwater Flow Simulator for this lab.
For a more complete list of different contaminates check out the USGS website.
Groundwater Contamination can be difficult to remediate; the following link is how one company tackles the issue. Regenesis.
