BYTES
College of Science Learning Community for First-Year Students
Do you want to join a tight-knit group of fellow Boilermakers who share your curiosity and drive? The BYTES Learning Community is your launchpad.
BYTES (Building Your Technical Expertise in Science) is a four-year, interdisciplinary learning community at Purdue designed to give College of Science students the real-world skills today’s science careers demand. From day one, you’ll live and learn alongside fellow science majors, take a first-year course that spans everything from the UN Sustainable Development Goals to AI Competency, and get direct exposure during Lab Crawl Week, which introduces you to cutting-edge research across campus. With support from peer mentors, dedicated staff, and a vibrant residential community, you’ll build teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills while having plenty of fun. As you move into your later years, you’ll tap into research and internship opportunities, connect with industry partners and alums, and deepen the interpersonal and intercultural strengths that set Purdue scientists apart in the global workforce.
What You’ll Experience
- Live and learn together. You’ll be housed with other BYTES students in the same residence hall, building a strong community right from the start.
- Dedicated coursework. You’ll take a first-year seminar (SCI 195) designed to build your academic toolkit, introduce research and career opportunities, and connect you with faculty and resources across campus.
- Faculty and staff support. Our team is here to help you navigate your first year—from finding your classes to finding your path. We offer personalized support and encouragement every step of the way.
- Social and professional events. From game nights and coffee chats to panel discussions and alumni networking, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to build friendships and grow your network.
Who Should Join?
BYTES is open to all incoming first-year students in the College of Science. It’s a great fit for students who want to be part of a collaborative, tech-forward, and supportive environment.
