Professor Marcy Towns has been named associate dean for leadership excellence for the Purdue University College of Science. In her new role, she will facilitate faculty awards and faculty mentoring for the Office of the Dean. Towns will lead efforts to assist faculty with the Purdue University Books Initiative by serving on the campuswide leadership team for books and award nominations.

“It’s a privilege to continue collaborating with and empowering the talented faculty in the College of Science.  I look forward to working with Dean Flesch and her team to support faculty success, foster their professional growth, and celebrate their achievements,” said Towns.

Towns is a true Boilermaker.  She earned both her M.S. and Ph.D in chemistry at Purdue University and went on to become the Bodner-Honig Professor within the James Tarpo Jr. and Margaret Tarpo Department of Chemistry. She has also served in recent leadership roles such as interim head for Chemistry and Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences within the College of Science.  Towns also serves a faculty athletics representative, appointed by President Chiang, for Purdue University,

“Professor Towns has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership in the College where she has been dedication to faculty development and fostering excellence. Her achievements as a scholar and mentor make her the perfect choice for this new role, and I am confident she will have a profound impact on supporting our faculty,” said Lucy Flesch, Frederick L. Hovde Dean, College of Science.

Towns is a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Board on Science Education. She received the 2017 American Chemical Society (ACS) Award for Achievement in Research for the Teaching and Learning of Chemistry, the 2017 James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry from the Northeast Section of the ACS, and the 2019 Nyholm Prize in Education from the Royal Society of Chemistry, in addition to numerous teaching awards from Purdue University.  In 2021 she was named an IUPAC Distinguished Woman of Chemistry.  She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2019), the American Chemical Society (2012), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2009).
