Horizons Director Brittany Allensworth  was selected by Indiana TRIO to represent the chapter in the Educational Opportunity Association’s (EOA) Emerging Leaders Institute’s (ELI) 2022 cohort. Brittany was joined by seven other professionals representing the other chapters in the region.

ELIs were charged by the Association’s president to develop a programmatic structure for TRIO/Gear Up programs to embed global access as a key component of their federal grants. This one-year intensive experience consisted of

  • Four formal training sessions scheduled in person with the Educational Opportunity Association’s executive board

  • Monthly check-in meetings with trainers and weekly cohort work meetings

  • Training on Global Access

  • Reading assignments and group debriefs

  • Creation of a 42-page Global Access Handbook that will soon reside within the Best Practices section on the EOA website

Additionally, ELIs participated in a study abroad experience conducted by the Northeastern Illinois University TRIO Upward Bound Math Science. This experience took eight rising high school seniors, or recent high school graduates to Medellin, Colombia, where they conducted near-peer education on a variety of STEAM topics, including, TinkerCad, simple machines, circuitry, and programing.

In addition to observing students, ELIs participated in cultural experiences in-country that included authentic Colombian food, dance, music, and sights, as well as opportunities to connect with educational leaders from two local universities.

This experience officially concluded in at the EOA Annual Conference with a presentation to the entire Association.
