Research Profile:

Granzyme A (GzmA), a serine protease produced by immune cells, is traditionally known for inducing apoptosis in tumor and virally infected cells. However, recent studies reveal its extracellular role in inflammation and immune dysregulation. In diseases like graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), which occurs post-cancer immunotherapy, our research shows increased GzmA expression and its critical role in severe GVHD. These findings highlight GzmA as a key regulator of disease pathology when overproduced. Despite this, the mechanisms of GzmA's disease contribution remain unclear. My current work reveals elevated GzmA-microbe interactions in GVHD-afflicted mice, with GzmA preferentially binding to disease-associated microbiota. We propose that this association enhances microbial capacity to drive intestinal inflammation and GVHD. Our data suggest that GzmA binding to these microbes likely drives disease post-cancer immunotherapy. Therapeutically targeting GzmA-microbe interactions could potentially reduce intestinal pathology while preserving anti-cancer efficacy.

Why PULSe:

I chose Purdue University because the PULSe program offers an interdisciplinary approach to immunology and cancer biology, fostering collaboration across various departments. One feature that particularly attracted me is the first year of rotations, allowing us to conduct research in multiple departments, work with graduate students from different fields, and gain invaluable knowledge. This helps us choose the lab and project that we are most passionate about. Additionally, PULSe provides exceptional student support, exemplified by the Graduate Student Organization's mentoring program. The program also offers numerous seminars, panels, and workshops that help me explore various career paths and develop as an academic professional.

About Me:

Outside of the academy, I am a cat lover, my favorite plan is to spend time with my cats – Lucy and Lena! I also like artistic makeup and skating with friends.
