Nexus Purdue-UNSA ‘Plant-microbe interactions’ team publish paper in Applied Soil Ecology Journal

Arequipa Nexus Institute ‘Plant-microbe interactions’ team published a paper on soil fungal communities on farms in Arequipa, which face crop diseases caused by soil-borne fungal pathogens, in the Applied Soil Ecology journal. The composition and potential functional roles of soil fungal communities on 12 farms was characterized using SMRT sequencing and compared based on location and farm age to investigate possible drivers of the pathogens’ structure and function.
Purdue-UNSA ‘Food Safety’ TEAM completes productive stage in research

The “Developing good agricultural and manufacturing practices” project recently completed two weeks of productive fieldwork evaluating the microbiological quality of Arequipa’s irrigation water and testing for pesticide residues. Purdue Post-Doctoral Researcher Silvia J R Vargas visited UNSA laboratories to start the project stage related to the determination of pesticide residues in irrigation waters and continue evaluation of their microbiological quality. An irrigation water sampling protocol was established, with training administered to UNSA staff, Mg. Erika Pachari and Mg. Yemina Díaz. 45 samples were obtained from 15 collection points in the Cayma, Tiabaya, and Majes districts of Arequipa.

Dr. Grethel Choque arrives for month-long research at Purdue

He was Professor of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University and the Senior Associate Director of Agricultural Research, Assistant Dean in the College of Agriculture.

UNSA Ranked 1st public university to sustain progress and 2nd best public university in Perú

Purdue's strategic partner in Peru, Universidad Nacional de San Agustin (UNSA) has been ranked as the 1st public university with sustained progress between 2016 and 2021, and 2nd best university public in the country. UNSA published the results recognized by SUNEDU, the Peruvian Agency Overseeing universities in the country, based on the ranking of SCIMAGO Institutions Rankings. According to the university, the fundamental factor for this remarkable position has been the institutional emphasis on transforming their research system into a scientific research focused on solving urgent problems in the region. Dr. Rohel Sanchez, UNSA's Rector; Dr. Ana Maria Gutierrez, Vice-Rector for Education and Dr. Horacio Barreda, Vice-Rector for Research have been recognized in different instances for their leadership and unwavering dedication to transform UNSA since 2016 when they were elected into their positions.
Nexus Institute social media shows remarkable engagement growth

The Purdue Arequipa Nexus Institute Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram platforms each reached over 100% more users in the last month, during which Nexus launched its Earth Day Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) social media campaign. Arequipa Nexus Instagram page reached 216% more users in the last 30 days than the previous period, while the Facebook page experienced a growth in reach of 184% and Twitter 103%. The growth in reach demonstrates how Nexus’s online communications were seen by more users, which resulted in a growth in followers on each platform.

Arequipa Nexus Researchers Presented Papers at the 8th IEEE Virtual Conference on Technologies for Sustainability

Nexus “Towards Clean Water” researchers, Drs. Emad Elwakil and Thikra Dawood, along with their UNSA partner, Dr. Hector Novoa, presented two papers at the: 8th IEEE Virtual Conference on Technologies for Sustainability. The virtual event was hosted from April 22-24, 2021 and researchers from diverse backgrounds shared their work and innovate tools that focus on the development, application of science, engineering and technology to address environmental issues. The conference aims to expose attendees to the latest tools, creating connections and innovative solutions to take their sustainability programs to the next level.
