Corresponding with independent study students from all across the world for many years has enriched my life. I’ve been a lifelong student and practitioner of science education with a focus on essential understandings by citizens."

Florence L. Juillerat began her career in education more than 40 years ago as a public school teacher in New York and Indiana. In 1966, she became a biology instructor at Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis, or IUPUI. She later was appointed professor emerita at IUPUI, holding that position until she retired in 2004.

She has received many awards for teaching and service, including the Indiana University President’s Award for Teaching, the Distinguished Service Award from the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, and the Four Year College Biology Award for Excellence in Teaching from the National Association of Biology Teachers. She also developed two award-winning biology correspondence courses for Indiana University’s School of Continuing Studies and has served in multiple leadership posts for teacher organizations.

  • 1992 - Received the IUPUI Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching
