Alan R. Hevner is a Distinguished University Professor and Eminent Scholar in the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department in the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida, where he holds the Citigroup/Hidden River Chair of Distributed Technology.
A three-time graduate of Purdue University with a BS, MS, and PhD in computer science, Hevner served on the faculty at the University of Minnesota and the University of Maryland, where he was chair of the information systems faculty, before he joined the faculty at the University of South Florida in 1994.
IBM and numerous Fortune 500 companies have called on Hevner’s expertise in his areas of research — information systems development, software engineering, distributed database systems, healthcare systems, Internet of Things computing, and design science research. He has published more than 200 research papers on these topics and served on the editorial review boards of several prominent journals in his field. From 2006 to 2009, Hevner was a program manager at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate.
Hevner is a pioneer whose development of conceptual and methodological innovations have earned him recognition as a leader in the field of design science research, with more than 18,000 citations to his work. His seminal 2004 MIS Quarterly article has over 10,000 citations and ranks among the most widely cited publications in the entire field of information systems. An inspirational teacher, Hevner has mentored 17 doctoral students to completion of their PhDs.
