Q: What is the Motivation Code (MCode)?

A: MCode is a short assessment that helps you better understand what motivates you and the factors that influence how you approach goals, decisions, and challenges. It provides insight into the why behind your thoughts, decisions, and actions and can help you better understand what energizes you, what helps you succeed, and what may create challenges.

Q: Why should I take it?

A: MCode can help you better understand your personal motivations so you can:

  • Recognize your patterns and preferences
  • Identify strategies that work best for you
  • Reflect on how you make decisions and set goals
  • Find ways to stay motivated and overcome challenges
  • Learn more about what energizes and supports your success

Q: How does it work?

A: Everything MCode reveals starts with the stories you share — meaningful, satisfying, or important experiences from your life.

  • Step 1: Share your stories
Everything MCode reveals starts with the stories you share — meaningful, satisfying, or important experiences from your life.
  • Step 2: Answer questions
Next, the assessment asks questions about your stories, including:
    • How you felt
    • What you did
    • What you enjoyed
    • Why the experience mattered
You'll rank your responses on a scale from 1–10.
  • Step 3: Discover your MCode!
After completing the assessment, you’ll receive your personalized MCode results and learn more about how your motivations influence the way you approach school, work, goals, and challenges.

Q: How can I use my results?

A: Your results are designed for reflection and self-discovery. You can use them to:

  • Better understand your motivations and strengths
  • Identify environments or approaches that help you succeed
  • Reflect on goals, decisions, and challenges
  • Support class assignments or leadership activities
  • Think about how you work with and relate to others

Be sure to save or print your results so you can revisit them later.

Q: Who will see my stories?

A: The stories you share in MCode are only visible to you and are used as part of the assessment process to help generate your results. Your personal stories are not uploaded to BoilerConnect.

A summary of your MCode results will appear in BoilerConnect as a quick reference guide for advisors and student success staff, but it will not include the stories you shared. The purpose of sharing results is to provide additional context that can help support student success and meaningful conversations.

Q: Are there right or wrong answers?

A: No. MCode is not a test, grade, or evaluation. The most helpful results come from answering honestly and reflecting on experiences that are meaningful to you.

Q: How can I use this with Strengths?

A: MCode and Strengths work well together because they help answer different questions about who you are.

Strengths helps answer: What do I naturally do well?
MCode helps answer: What motivates and energizes me?

Together, they can help you better understand your talents, motivations, and how you approach goals, learning, and success.

Q: I have more questions, where do I get help?

A: Email Student Success Technologies at sst@purdue.edu.
