Hand Raise- A hand raise is a feature that allows students to proactively ask for help by submitting a request in BoilerConnect Student. When a student submits a hand raise, they select a specific reason for their request (e.g., want to change major, didn't pass an exam, etc), and this sends an alert to the appropriate support staff on campus who will then follow up with the student. Have an idea for a hand raise? Email us at boilerconnect@purdue.edu with your ideas.
Journeys- A Journey is a feature in BoilerConnect Student that helps students achieve success by guiding them through a series of personalized steps and goals.
Examples of current Journeys:
- Finding an On-Campus Job
- Hammer Down Wellness
- Help with Academic Success Skills

Q. Is Smart Plan replacing myPurduePlan?
A. No. Academic Advisors and students will use myPurduePlan and Smart Plan together for a full degree auditing and planning experience. myPurduePlan will continue to serve as the official degree audit platform, while Smart Plan provides dynamic course planning.
Q. Why should students use Smart Plan?
A. Smart Plan clearly shows students how to map out their remaining course requirements to efficiently earn a degree in four years or less. To do this, the system takes into account pre-requisite courses and advising recommendations to generate a degree path starting point for each student. When students plan and select courses for future terms using Smart Plan, it helps the university know how many sections of a course should be offered in a particular term.
Q. Why does Smart Plan sometimes recommend taking several challenging courses within a single term?
A. Smart Plan attempts to generate the most timely path to degree based on and advising roadmap provided by the unit. It also takes into account key pre- and co-requisites, and when courses are typically offered. Smart Plan does not attempt to evaluate the mix of courses planned in a term as many factors can contribute to the appropriateness of the schedule for an individual student. The planned degree path should be reviewed and adjusted by the student and advisor in order to maximize the student's ability to succeed.
Q. Does Smart Plan capture a failed course?
A. Yes. If a student fails a course required for their degree, the course will repopulate in a future appropriate term within Smart Plan.
Q. How does the What-if Plan in Smart Plan compare to a What-if Report in myPurduePlan?
A. Similar to myPurduePlan, the Smart Plan What-if Plan provides information based on their intended major. The Smart Plan What-if Plan provides a suggested path to complete the intended major in a semester by semester view, while the myPurduePlan What-if Report is a more comprehensive look at all degree requirements.

Motivation Code (MCode)
MCode (Motivation Code) is a student-completed, story-based assessment designed to help students better understand what motivates them and influences how they approach goals, decisions, and challenges. Students receive personalized results that identify patterns in what energizes them and supports their success.
MCode is intended to supplement Strengths, not replace it. Strengths helps identify a student's natural talents and patterns, while MCode provides additional insight into the motivations that influence how students engage, make decisions, and approach opportunities. Together, they can support more meaningful, student-centered conversations.
Student MCode results are available in BoilerConnect and are intended to provide advisors and student success staff with additional context to support engagement and complement professional judgment.
MCode + Strengths
Strengths: What do I naturally do well?
MCode: What motivates and energizes me?
Together: How can I better understand myself and succeed?
Q: What is MCode?
A: MCode (Motivation Code) is a student-completed, story-based assessment designed to help students better understand what motivates them and influences how they approach goals, decisions, and challenges. Students receive personalized results that identify patterns in their motivations and what energizes them.
Q: How long does MCode take to complete?
A: Completion time may vary by student, but most students can complete MCode in approximately 20–30 minutes. Students are encouraged to complete the assessment in one sitting when possible. To help students prepare, you may encourage them to think ahead about a few fulfilling experiences or activities they have participated in, as having these examples in mind may help reduce the time needed to complete the assessment.
Q: How does MCode relate to Strengths?
A: MCode is intended to supplement Strengths, not replace it.
- Strengths helps answer: What do I naturally do well?
- MCode helps answer: What motivates and energizes me?
Together, they can provide a more complete picture of the student experience and support more personalized conversations. We highly recommend users take Strengths before taking MCode.
Q: Can students retake MCode?
A: Like Strengths, students should not retake MCode. The assessment is designed to provide meaningful insights based on a student’s experiences and is intended to be completed once.
Q: Where can I find MCode results?
A: Student MCode results will appear in BoilerConnect after a student completes the assessment.
Q: What will I see in BoilerConnect?
A: Advisors and staff will see a quick reference guide of the student’s MCode results, designed to provide helpful context and insight into student motivations.
Personal stories shared during the assessment are not visible in BoilerConnect.
Q: Will I be able to see the stories students entered?
A: No. Students’ personal stories are not shared with Purdue staff and are not uploaded into BoilerConnect. Only the student sees the stories they entered.
Q: How might I use MCode in my work with students?
A: MCode is intended to complement your existing practices and professional judgment. However, MCode can help provide additional context when:
- Preparing for advising or student support conversations
- Exploring goals, challenges, or next steps
- Tailoring communication approaches
- Connecting student motivations with Strengths discussions
- Coordinating support across offices
Q: What if a student has not completed MCode?
A: Nothing changes. MCode information will only appear in BoilerConnect if a student has completed the assessment.
Q: Am I expected to encourage students to take MCode? How can I introduce it?
A: While there is not an expectation that advisors and staff promote MCode in every interaction, we encourage you to introduce it when it may support a student’s growth, reflection, or goals. MCode is designed to help students better understand what motivates and energizes them, and can provide helpful insight for students as they navigate decisions, challenges, and opportunities.
MCode may fit naturally into conversations around:
- Strengths and self-awareness
- Goal setting and decision-making
- Leadership development
- Career exploration
- Academic planning and student success strategies
- Career and/or major exploration
Q: How can I use MCode in career and/or major exploration?
A: MCode can help students reflect on the types of experiences, environments, and activities that naturally energize and motivate them. While MCode is not designed to tell students what major or career to choose, it can provide additional insight that supports exploration and decision-making.
MCode can help inform conversations such as:
- What types of work or experiences feel most meaningful to the student?
- What environments may help them feel engaged and motivated?
- How might their motivations connect with their interests and Strengths?
- What opportunities, roles, or experiences align with what energizes them?
Used alongside tools like Strengths, MCode can help students better understand both what they naturally do well and what motivates them, creating a more complete picture as they explore majors and career paths.
Q: What if a student has questions about or disagrees with their MCode results?
A: MCode results are intended to support reflection and conversation rather than define or label a student. Encourage students to think about whether the results resonate with the experiences they shared during the assessment and use the information as a starting point for discussion.
Q: Will training and resources be available?
A: Yes. Additional resources, guidance, examples, and training opportunities will be shared to help advisors and staff understand and use MCode.
Q: Can I take the MCode assessment?
A: Yes! Purdue faculty and staff can also take MCode at no cost. Experiencing the assessment yourself can be a great way to better understand the student experience, become familiar with the results, and learn more about your own motivations.
