Nexus Institute social media shows remarkable engagement growth

May 21, 2021

The Purdue Arequipa Nexus Institute Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram platforms each reached over 100% more users in the last month, during which Nexus launched its Earth Day Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) social media campaign.  Arequipa Nexus Instagram page reached 216% more users in the last 30 days than the previous period, while the Facebook page experienced a growth in reach of 184% and Twitter 103%. The growth in reach demonstrates how Nexus’s online communications were seen by more users, which resulted in a growth in followers on each platform.

Arequipa Nexus Researchers Presented Papers at the 8th IEEE Virtual Conference on Technologies for Sustainability

Nexus “Towards Clean Water” researchers, Drs. Emad Elwakil and Thikra Dawood, along with their UNSA partner, Dr. Hector Novoa, presented two papers at the: 8th IEEE Virtual Conference on Technologies for Sustainability. The virtual event was hosted from April 22-24, 2021 and researchers from diverse backgrounds shared their work and innovate tools that focus on the development, application of science, engineering and technology to address environmental issues. The conference aims to expose attendees to the latest tools, creating connections and innovative solutions to take their sustainability programs to the next level.

Purdue Graduate Student Researcher in Dr. Chad Jafvert's Arequipa Nexus Project Receives Award

April 21, 2021

Taymee Brandon, graduate student researcher in Dr. Chad Jafvert’s Arequipa nexus project: “Seasonal Heavy Metal Concentrations in Streams in the Arequipa Region”, was awarded the second place in the International Development (I2D) Exposition at Purdue. The virtual event was hosted by Purdue’s Shah Family Global Lab and the poster topics were social development challenges, sustainable development goals and global challenges. Taymee  Brandon presented the work she developed with Dr. Jafvert, Drs. Betty Paredes and Dr. Corina Gonzales from the Universidad Nacional of Saint Augustine de Arequipa (UNSA), who are Co-PIs in the project.

UNSA presents the book: "Towards a sustainable development strategy for the bicentennial Peru" by Alan Fairlie Reinoso

On April 7, Dr. Rohel Sánchez Sánchez, Rector of UNSA , presented the book: "Towards a sustainable development strategy for the bicentennial Peru" by Alan Fairlie Reinoso, who is member of the Andino Parlament. The book recognizes the need for university research, and Dr. Rohel Sánchez Sánchez announced during the event the UNSA's goal in research development, leadership in basic, applied, and technological research. The Purdue Arequipa Nexus institute was listed as one of the major international partners to assist UNSA reach its research development goal.

Environmental Justice Film Series: Mothers of the Land

The 2021 Environmental Justice Film Series presents the film Sembradoras de Vida (Mothers of the Land) as part of the Environmental Justice Symposium this Thursday, March. 25th from 6-7:15 PM. This Quechua and Spanish language 2019 documentary with English subtitles accompany five women from the Andean highlands discuss their traditional knowledge and practices in order to maintain a sustainable agriculture. Diego Sarmiento, the Director of the film will participate in a post-screening discussion from 7:16-7:45 PM.

Special Message from Ministro Franklin Rojas Escalante on the 6th International Day of Women and Girls in Science

In celebration of the 6th International day of Women and Girls in Science, Ministro, Franklin Rojas Escalante, Consul General of Peru in Chicago congratulated the Arequipa Nexus Institute women researchers for their dedication and important role in scientific research that tackles fundamental problems in Arequipa such as, the sustainability of food, water, energy, and the environment.

Nexus authors special issue of The Journal of Contemporary Research and Education

Several Nexus researcher’s papers were recently published in a special December 2020 issue of The Journal of Contemporary Research and Education.  The issue, titled “Challenges and Opportunities to Support Water Management Adaptation in Water-Scarce Regions of Peru,” confronted complex water resource challenges in regions where water is scarce, considering both environmental and social aspects. All articles were co-authored by Arequipa Nexus members from Purdue and UNSA.

Nexus Institute’s 3rd Annual Workshop Series successfully concludes fall sessions

December 18, 2020

The Arequipa Nexus Institute hosted its Third Annual Technical Workshop Series from October 26 to December 11. 13 workshops were held in an asynchronous virtual format, combining recorded presentations and lectures, live sessions, and assignments to enhance the attendee’s learning experience. A total of 157 participants from Purdue and UNSA registered for the sessions, accessed the learning materials in an asynchronous way, sharing questions and comments in live sessions with the instructors. After completing the modules, the participants who successfully completed at least 20 academic hours of work and successfully approved their workshop evaluations will be awarded technical certificates.

Purdue international partner cuts ribbon for new science and technology park based on Discovery Park model

December 16, 2020

The Purdue University-affiliated Arequipa Nexus Institute for Food, Energy, Water and the Environment in Peru soon will be getting a permanent administrative home. On Dec. 3, the Universidad de San Augustín (UNSA) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the start of activities for the Science and Technology Park of Arequipa (PCT), the first institution of its kind in the country. Modeled after Purdue’s Discovery Park, the research technology park will house headquarters for the Arequipa Nexus Institute, underlining the continued impact and long-term nature of the collaborative project. “The park will provide the essential intellectual and physical infrastructure to ensure that UNSA plays a key role in Arequipa’s future,” said Theresa Mayer, executive vice president of research and partnerships, who recorded remarks for the ceremony. “These investments will also advance efforts to build regional economic resilience during a time when Peru and the world face common challenges.”
