Investigating the Attitude of Intercultural Openness (ICKC)

Kris Acheson-Clair, PhD

Kris Acheson-Clair, PhD, is CILMAR’s (Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research) director and holds a courtesy faculty appointment in the Brian Lamb School of Communication within the College of Liberal Arts. Perhaps best known in intercultural learning (ICL) circles for her article on representing the Intercultural Development Continuum as a pendulum and for her scholarly work with the Beliefs, Events, and Values Inventory, Kris has also published book chapters and journal articles on a variety of topics including the meaning of silenceemotion labor (emotional labor), mentorship, and the assessment of ICL in study abroad.

Kris earned a PhD in Intercultural Communication in 2008 from Arizona State University. She served as faculty in Applied Linguistics at Georgia State for 6 years and as a Fulbright Scholar to Honduras in 2015.

Horane A. Diatta-Holgate, PhD

Horane Diatta-Holgate, PhD, is the Program Director of Inclusive Pedagogy ND Learning | Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence. Horane supports and consults with instructors (faculty and graduate students) on cultivating inclusive classroom environments for and with their students. Horane also provides support to instructors developing their intercultural knowledge and competence to enact inclusive teaching practices as well as embed diversity, equity and inclusivity throughout different elements of their course and curriculum.

Horane is a qualified administrator of several assessments for intercultural learning and development including the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), Cultural Intelligence (CQ), Beliefs Events and Values Inventory (BEVI) and Intercultural Communication Edge (ICEdge).

Horane has also worked alongside colleagues in developing measures to help instructors assess students’ development of various intercultural, civic engagement and global attitudes, skills and knowledge based on the associated AAC&U VALUE Rubrics. He also developed measures to assess students’ perceptions of cultural responsiveness in the classroom environment.

Horane has a B.A. in Psychology and minor in Sociology from Johnson C. Smith University as well as a MSEd and PhD in Educational Psychology and Research Methodology from Purdue University. Prior to joining ND Learning, Horane was a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Purdue University Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE) and College of Agriculture Office of Multicultural Programs.

Alankrita Chhikara, PhD

Alankrita Chhikara, PhD, in Curriculum Studies from Purdue University, is the Postdoctoral Research Associate for the Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment (CILMAR) at Purdue University. Bringing her experience teaching high school and a range of undergraduate and graduate courses on multiculturalism, global studies, intercultural learning, and community engagement, Alankrita tries to cultivate inclusive educational environments. At CILMAR, she coordinates the Semester Abroad in Intercultural Learning (SAIL) program and partners with intercultural and DEI experts to develop curriculum, conduct research, and assess intercultural learning in courses and programs. In 2021, she was awarded Purdue's Boiler Changemaker Award.

Alankrita obtained her MA in Educational Leadership and Societal Change from Soka University of America. She is interested in curriculum questions that pertain to diversity, inclusion, multiculturalism, and global citizenship. She is engaged in research projects that explore developing intercultural competence for multicultural engineering team effectiveness, and the effectiveness of professional development on critical approaches to race, gender, immigration, and language in national and international contexts.

Hilary Landorf, PhD

Hilary Landorf, PhD, is Assistant Vice President of Global Learning Initiatives at Florida International University (FIU), where she oversees FIU’s university-wide initiative, Global Learning for Global Citizenship. She is also an Associate Professor of International and Intercultural Education in the School of Education and Human Development. In 2022, she was awarded NAFSA’s Award for Leadership and Collaboration in International Education. She is a Fulbright Specialist, a Fulbright Fellow in the International Education Administrators Program in France, an inaugural member of the National Academy of International Education, and a Senior Scholar with the Association of American Colleges & Universities’ Office of Global Citizenship for Campus, Community, and Careers.

Dr. Landorf’s expertise centers on visioning, developing, implementing, and assessing the policies and practices of global learning efforts in higher education. She has written, consulted, and presented internationally on integrating global learning into higher education. Her latest co-authored book is Making Global Learning Universal: Promoting Inclusion and Success for All Students. She holds a Ph.D. in International Education from New York University, an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Virginia, and a B.A. from Stanford University.

Aletha Stahl, PhD

Aletha Stahl, PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Iowa, is the lead intercultural learning specialist within Purdue's CILMAR: the Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research. Before coming to CILMAR, she spent more than two decades in the Department of Languages and Cultures at Earlham College, where as Professor of French and Francophone Studies, she taught multiple courses in French and in interdisciplinary programs; developed and led international study programs in Martinique, Haiti, and Montreal, among others; served as Teaching and Learning Consultant and Co-Director of the Center for Social Justice; and advised students both academically and on their senior capstones.
At Purdue, her responsibilities include working with instructors and programs on curricular needs assessments and intervention design related to intercultural learning, facilitating workshops primarily for faculty and staff, and managing the Growing Intercultural Leaders (GIL) programs.

Leslie Bozeman, PhD

Leslie A. Bozeman, PhD, is Director of Curriculum Internationalization in the Office of International Affairs at Indiana University Indianapolis.

She provides leadership for the vision, development, and implementation of the campus’ curricular and co-curricular internationalization efforts. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, she has worked with academic and student affairs at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as local, state, national, and international initiatives.

 

Leslie has taught seminars on global education and global engagement and has guest-lectured on the topics of conducting international research and case-study methodology. She demonstrates a commitment to engaging with cultural populations and facilitating cross-cultural understanding on and off campus through a history of membership and leadership in cultural organizations and by designing and delivering workshops on intercultural communication and aspects of American culture.

She earned her doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Boston College, focusing her research on collaboration between universities in the U.S. and Brazil

Aparajita Jaiswal, PhD

Aparajita Jaiswal is an Intercultural Research Specialist at CILMAR, Purdue University. Her work focuses on developing strategies to seamlessly integrate intercultural learning into both standard curricula and study abroad programs. She provides guidance on developing research studies, enhancing curricula, and creating assessment methods to cultivate intercultural competence. Aparajita also specializes in facilitating workshops and training sessions, supporting the professional development of both staff and students at Purdue University.

Aparajita has extensive experience utilizing both the AAC&U ICKC rubric and Global Learning VALUE Rubrics. Examples of her research demonstrating the effective use of these rubrics include "Enhancing Intercultural Learning in Study Abroad Through an Online Curriculum in Group-Mentored Intervention" (April 2024) and "It's Never Too Soon! Comparing Intercultural Learning Outcomes of Undergraduate Students via Face-to-Face and Online Teaching Modalities" (August 2023).

Aparajita earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Management, Human Resources, and Marketing from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. She received an MBA from Motilal Nehru Institute of Research & Business Administration. She holds a PhD in Computer and Information Technology from Purdue University.

Caryl Waggett, PhD

Caryl Waggett

Caryl Waggett, PhD, joined the Allegheny College faculty in 2003 and is the founding chair of the College’s Global Health Studies Program. Over the past two decades, she has grown her work as an environmental health scientist into a thriving multidisciplinary public health major and minor. She regularly integrates active learning into her courses, including community-based participatory research focused on remediating local environmental hazards.

Caryl has had a long interest in integrating public health thinking and content across the undergraduate curriculum. She has contributed to the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) initiatives on public health, liberal education, and educated citizenship, and has led workshops on experiential learning for ASPPH, the U.S. Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, and numerous other academic and professional organizations. She recently completed her second term as co-chair of the Subcommittee on Master’s and Undergraduate Degrees in Global Health for the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), which researches trends in global health education and develops resources for curricular development, advising, and assessment.

Caryl was named the recipient of the 2022 Riegelman Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Public Health Education from the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). The award recognizes faculty who have made exemplary efforts to start or sustain an undergraduate program, collaborated with community partners and other disciplines, and garnered respect and enthusiasm from students.

She is also the founder and director of Teach Global Health, an organization that has collaborated with ASPPH, CUGH, and other public health organizations to support excellence in teaching and mentoring at liberal arts colleges as well as research universities.

Tatjana Babic Williams, PhD

Tatjana Babic Williams, PhD in Comparative Literature from Purdue University, is a senior lecturer of Italian, director of Italian Studies, and CILMAR (Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research) Faculty Fellow.  She teaches all levels of Italian language, culture, and literature at Purdue. Her research interests include intercultural pedagogy, African-Italian literature, immigration, and postcolonial studies. Tatjana has engaged in an intensive collaboration with CILMAR, which provided opportunities for theoretical and practical training in intercultural learning through numerous grants and fellowships.

With CILMAR's support, Tatjana operationalized a large-scale redesign of the Italian curriculum to embed systematic and intentional intercultural learning at the level of the entire program, using the AAC&U Intercultural Knowledge and Competence VALUE Rubric to determine the learning outcomes and to assess learners’ growth in intercultural knowledge, skills, and attitudes. She has experience in intercultural curricular design and assessment in face-to-face and virtual learning environments. Tatjana organized a webinar series, presented at conferences, and led workshops on the topic of intercultural learning and assessment in world languages. At CILMAR, Tatjana facilitates the Worldview Workshops professional development program for staff and faculty, and she manages the Purdue InterCultural Learning Community of Practice (PICLCoP).

Kwesi Ewoodzie, PhD

Kwesi Ewoodzie, PhD, is the Founder and Director of Culture Beyond Borders, (CBB). He is a Ghanaian-American, a sociologist, and an interculturalist, with a passion for building bridges between the African continent and the Diaspora. His love for all elements of the African culture makes it easy for him to share the continent with all globally minded individuals, groups, or organizations. In addition to his work with CBB, Kwesi also serves as a strategic consultant, specialist and partner for training and research firms with a focus on networking, establishing relationships with global partners, and conducting workshops and training designed to help create more inclusive and equitable workplaces.

Kwesi holds a bachelor’s degree in applied psychology from Ithaca College (NY), and a Ph.D. in
sociology/intercultural exchange from the University of Iowa. Kwesi has served as the SIETAR
USA conference program co-chair in 2019 and 2020, and previously served on the Advisory
Council of the SIETAR USA Board of Directors.

Kelsey Patton, MA

After completing her BA in Communication and French, Kelsey Patton, MA, began a career in international education, assisting students in their study abroad application process and then engaging alumni as they adjusted back to life in their home culture. There, she learned the importance of intercultural learning, debriefing, and mentorship and transitioned to the Brain Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University where she completed her Master's degree in Interpersonal Communication, with focuses in Intercultural Communication & Mentorship. While at the Lamb School, she had the opportunity to serve as a graduate assistant at CILMAR and developed a passion for facilitating intercultural learning and dialogue across difference within and between student groups.

She uses the AAC&U rubrics regularly in activity design as she supports the curation and maintenance of the Intercultural Learning Hub (HubICL), co-develops and co-facilitates intercultural learning and mentorship workshops, and provides mentorship and instruction for both graduate and undergraduate courses in intercultural learning.

Kelsey holds a dual appointment as a communication specialist at the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence and as an intercultural learning specialist at the Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research, both at Purdue University.

 

Basma Ibrahim DeVries, PhD

Basma Ibrahim DeVries, PhD, is a professor of communication studies at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA and was a faculty member at the Summer Institute in Intercultural Communication in Portland, Oregon. Basma trains and consults on intercultural topics with corporate, educational, and community clients and facilitates workshops and simulation activities, in addition to performing at storytelling venues.

Basma is Egyptian-American and has spent much time traveling, working, and leading student travel and service learning courses in countries on 6 continents (she has not been to Antarctica yet!). Basma was the Intercultural Learning Circle Coordinator and Department Chair aboard the inaugural semester-long voyage of The Scholar Ship, where she was responsible for overseeing the intercultural competence development of students, staff, and faculty from 50 countries on an ocean-going university. Basma served on the national board of SIETAR-USA (Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research), and is founder and coordinator of SIETAR-Minnesota. Her publications include a co-authored book, Communication Highwire: Leveraging the Power of Diverse Communication Styles (Intercultural Press) and Cultural Detective: EGYPT, part of the web-based intercultural learning series, Cultural Detective (www.culturaldetective.com), in addition to book chapters and journal articles. Basma is a founding board of directors member and past Vice President of GiGi’s Playhouse–Twin Cities, Down Syndrome Achievement Center.

Basma earned her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Communication Studies, focusing her dissertation on Arab-American bicultural identity. She holds an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin and a B.A. in Psychology and Communication Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College.

H. Parker, PhD

H. Parker, PhD, is the Director of the Global Competence Initiative and the Assistant Director of Student Mobility & Assessment and Latin America/Spain Programs for Global Engineering Programs and Partnerships (GEPP) at Purdue University. She is charged with managing and implementing a competitive grant from the US Department of State to foster more inclusion and significantly increase the number of transformative experiences in the Americas including study abroad, internships abroad, and international research collaborations. Dr. Parker has over nine years of experience supporting campus initiatives and programs which strive to promote and advance innovative pedagogies by advocating for continuous improvement in teaching, learning, and service at Purdue and beyond.

For several years, Dr. Parker supported Purdue’s Global Learning Faculty and Student Development program, whose initiatives strive to optimize and transform classroom teaching and learning by integrating global competency into the curricula. She co-developed numerous resources, including intercultural and global learning assessment scales and digital badges, and has made various presentations at professional conferences to share open source applications and teaching tools designed to develop cross-cultural dexterity. Dr. Parker is a qualified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and collaborates closely with Purdue’s Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research (CILMAR) to promote and assess curricular and co-curricular intercultural learning options for the Purdue community while facilitating cutting edge research on intercultural competency topics of interest to the University and to the intercultural learning and assessment field.

Mary F. Price, PhD

Mary Price, PhD, is the inaugural Director of Teaching and Learning at the Forum on Education Abroad. She brings over 20 years' experience working with scholar-practitioners, students, professionals and community members as a thought partner and critical friend to strengthen practice, deepen learning and co-create actionable knowledge.

Most recently, Mary led faculty development at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis’ Center for Service & Learning focusing on efforts to support the success and advancement of publicly-engaged faculty, institutional capacity building, and curriculum integration of civic pedagogies, including community-based global learning, at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Mary’s scholarly interests emphasize the influence of community-academic partnership relationships on learning and community outcomes, the socialization and success of publicly-engaged faculty as part of campus equity, civic and student success agendas, and improving institutional climates for ethical and equitable community engagement in local and global contexts. Some of Mary's ongoing projects include: 

Mary received her PhD in Anthropology from Binghamton University, SUNY, and her Master’s in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida.
