University Choir performing selections from Considering Matthew Shepard during Fall Show 2023 at Long Center for the Performing Arts
On the 25th anniversary of the tragic death of Matthew Shepard, University Choir partnered with Lafayette Master Chorale to present Considering Matthew Shepard, a three-part oratorio by composer Craig Hella Johnson. Johnson, through a poignant fusion of poetic and soulful texts, narrates a compelling and sorrowful tale that guides the audience from horror and grief to a “higher understanding of the human condition, enabling us to endure.”
Michael Bennett, Artistic Director of Lafayette Master Chorale, expressed the hope that this unique musical collaboration would foster a sense of inclusion and respect within the campus and community, noting that “music is often the greatest healer, and we intend this remembrance to serve as an opportunity for the audience to be lifted up in the spirit of love and friendship.”
Reflecting on the profound impact of Matthew Shepard’s life and the tragedy surrounding his death, University Choir Director Jeff Vallier emphasized the power of unity.
“I like to believe that there were folks that may have been indifferent up to that point and suddenly after that incident realized that the thing that unites us is our desire to reject hate,” Vallier said.
University Choir members engaged in the study of Shepard’s life and the tragedy, finding a common ground in condemning the unacceptable treatment of fellow humans. Vallier noted the work encouraged a perspective shift, urging individuals to identify commonalities in their beliefs, fostering understanding.
University Choir member Abi Bruno expressed gratitude for the privilege of honoring Matthew Shepard’s life through the piece.
“This piece gave us the opportunity to see ourselves in Matthew’s life and story as well as the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of those who may be different than ourselves,” Bruno said. “Rehearsing such an emotionally charged piece challenged me to acknowledge how life can be filled with so much love and hate.”
In coming together for this poignant musical event, performers honored the memory and spirit of the late Matthew Shepard through song while promoting belonging and inclusion among members of the broader Lafayette community.
