Dr. Lee working with members of AC3
In the world of choral music, the pursuit of excellence is a continuous journey, marked by dedication, collaboration, and a commitment to growth. Dr. Hae-Jong Lee, Associate Professor at Dana School of Music & University Theatre, Youngstown State University, visited Bailey Hall during the Spring 2023 semester and held special clinic sessions with All-Campus & Community Chorale (AC3) and University Choir’s Chamber Choir specialty ensemble.
Dr. Lee’s collaboration with AC3 centered around the Korean Folk Song “Gyeon-bog-gung-Ta-ryeong,” offering a profound exploration of the Gyeong-gi province and the Gyeong-bog Palace of the Joseon dynasty. Dr. Lee’s emphasis on diction, character development, and the infusion of musical nuances inspired the ensemble members to work harder and push themselves further.
“After the rehearsal, everyone was so excited, and several kept asking if we could keep [him] forever,” said AC3 and Chamber Choir Director Joseph Bandi, laughing. “Everyone loved how energetic and enthusiastic he gets in front of an ensemble.”
Dr. Lee’s engagement with Chamber Choir presented a masterclass in conducting and musicality. Focusing on expressive moments in “Holding Our Breath,” Dr. Lee’s attention to detail elevated the group’s performance, making an already impactful piece written about the COVID-19 pandemic, even more meaningful. Students experienced a transformative shift in their singing based on Dr. Lee’s conducting insights, visibly reflected in their expressions. This clinic highlighted the invaluable growth opportunity for both conductor and ensemble, emphasizing Dr. Lee’s ability to push boundaries and raise the level of performance.
Clinics and workshops, such as those facilitated by Dr. Lee, play a crucial role in our mission here at PMO, providing unique musical experiences and opportunities for growth for students and directors alike. In this case, Dr. Lee infused a level of cultural authenticity to AC3’s performance of “Gyeon-bog-gung-Ta-ryeong” and helped refine Bandi’s directing gestures during Chamber Choir’s performance.
Ultimately, these experiences contribute to the continuous inspiration and improvement of everyone here at our organization. As we keep moving forward, lessons learned from Dr. Lee’s clinics serve as a testament to the transformative power of collaborative musical experiences.
