Purdue University’s Winter Session, starting its third year on Monday, Dec. 22, shows substantial growth as it continues to offer students an accessible opportunity to further their studies, reports Winter Session Manager John Race.

In just three years, Winter Session more than doubled its course offerings and tripled student enrollment. It now includes 26 courses from four colleges and 13 departments, serving 1,800 students during winter break.

Although the online courses are only three weeks long, Race explains data from 2024 shows Winter Session course quality and outcomes compare well to other traditional 16-week classes.

“Students often express surprise by how much they enjoy the pace and focus of winter classes. They find a strong sense of confidence and accomplishment after completing a rigorous course in just three weeks.”

He notes this success is largely thanks to the efforts of the instructors who design the accelerated classes.

“Instructors see the value in supporting students through these online classes and are eager to innovate and reach new learners.”

Race says Winter Session has garnered attention from students because they can keep earning credit through it over break but also stay flexible to balance other personal commitments.
