Starting college can feel overwhelming, but Purdue’s Early Start program is designed to make that transition smoother — and the latest feedback shows it’s working. Students reported feeling more prepared, more connected and more comfortable asking for help.

Early Start helps participants take their first small steps in college by teaching them about campus resources and academic expectations, helping them balance motivation with confidence as they learn to take initiative and navigate challenges effectively. These outcomes create an environment that supports academic success and personal well-being, reflecting Purdue’s commitment to the Steps to Leaps pillars.

Purdue introduced the first Early Start cohort at its new location in Indianapolis during summer 2025, extending access to the program. In its inaugural year, the Indianapolis experience created meaningful touchpoints with faculty, peer mentors and key resources, offering structured support and early academic momentum within a small community experience.

By developing foundational academic habits and a sense of belonging, this launch reinforces the Steps to Leaps priorities of well-being, leadership, impact and networks. Early Start plays a critical role in cultivating a strong sense of belonging. Survey results showed significant increases in inclusion and psychological safety, especially in feeling respected and accepted. These traits, along with developing a growth mindset, are positive indicators for student success.

The program further reduces the stigma around seeking help, encouraging students to connect with professors, peers and campus support services. Early Start isn’t ultimately just about academics — it’s about helping students feel prepared, connected and supported as they begin their Purdue journey.
