Chris Hanes, Ph.D. HSPP
Assistant Vice Provost for Student Well-Being and
Senior Director of Counseling and Psychological Services
Christopher Hanes currently serves as assistant vice provost for Student Well-Being within the Division of Student Life, which supports the well-being units of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Purdue University Student Health (PUSH), Recreation and Wellness (RecWell), and Well-being Programs. He also serves as senior director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which is the primary provider of mental health services for Purdue students.
Hanes is a counseling psychologist with extensive expertise in college student mental health, program administration, and systems level leadership in higher education. Hanes focuses on building accessible, evidence-informed, and student-centered services that promote well-being across the campus community.
Hanes held several leadership positions in counseling and psychological services including director, student counseling services at Iowa State University (2019-21), associate director, CAPS at the University of Cincinnati (2017-19) and associate director/clinical director, CAPS at the University of Central Florida (2013-17). He has previously served on the board of Association for the Coordination of Counseling Center Clinical Services (ACCCCS). He provided direct patient care for more that a decade at various schools, residential treatment settings and psychiatric hospitals (2002-13).
Hanes earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Indiana University, a masters in counseling from University of New Hampshire and a doctorate in counseling psychology with a minor in family psychology, also from Indiana University.
Hanes currently serves on the advisory board of the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH) and is an active member of American Psychological Association, American College Health Association, Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors and many other organizations.
