Patient Rights and Responsibilities

PUSH is dedicated to your health. We value your active participation in your health care and encourage you to know and exercise your rights and responsibilities.

PATIENT RIGHTS

As a patient at Purdue University Student Health Services (PUSH), you have the right to:

  • Be treated with kindness and respect.
  • Be heard. Your voice matters to us.
  • Get clear info about your diagnosis, treatment, and recovery process.
  • Make your own choices about your care, including saying no.
  • Expect consistent, safe care and the ability to switch providers if another qualified one is available.
  • Get care that’s free from discrimination.
  • Be told if something doesn’t go as planned with your care.
  • Ask for information in your preferred language.0
  • Receive info in a way works for you if you have vision, hearing, speech, or thinking/processing impairments.
  • Know the names and roles of people taking care of you.
  • Have a trusted friend or family member with you during your care.
  • Request a chaperone (a PUSH clinical staff member) with you during your visit to make sure privacy and respect are protected.
  • Keep your health records private and secure.
  • Get accurate information about costs and your payment options.
  • File an advance directive with PUSH and know it will be followed.
  • Speak up if you have concerns – call the Patient Advocate (765.494.1700).
  • Share feedback after your visit to let us know what worked well, and what didn’t.

PATIENT RESPONSIBILITIES

As a patient at Purdue University Student Health Services PUSH), you are a partner in your health care.

Your responsibilities in actively participating in your care include:

  • Share the full story: your health history, allergies, medications (including vitamins and over-the-counter stuff).
  • Keep us updated if anything changes with your health since your last visit.
  • Be honest with your provider. It helps us help you.
  • If you can’t or don’t want to follow the treatment plan, let us know. We’ll figure it out together.
  • Ask questions if something doesn’t make sense. Your provider is here to explain.
  • Actively participate in your care
  • Let us know if you have a living will, power of attorney, or other directions that could affect the care you receive.
  • Know that you’re responsible for the costs of your care at PUSH.
  • If a procedure means you can’t drive yourself home, bring someone you trust to get you back safely and to stay with you as long as your provider says in your discharge instructions.
  • Keep your appointments. If you can’t make it, cancel early so another student can use the spot.
  • Show respect to staff and other patients. Kindness goes both ways.
